Once upon a time, there were three billy goats gruff. They all wanted to cross a bridge to reach a lush, green meadow on the other side, where the grass was sweet and plentiful. But under the bridge lived a troll, a big, ugly troll with a long nose and big, glaring eyes.
First, the littlest billy goat gruff came to the bridge. Trip, trap, trip, trap, went his hooves on the wooden planks.
"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll.
"Oh, it is only I, the littlest billy goat gruff," said the little goat, his voice trembling. "I'm going to the meadow to get fat."
"No, you're not!" shouted the troll. "I'm coming to eat you up!"
"Oh, no! Don't take me! I'm too little," pleaded the goat. "Wait for the middle billy goat gruff. He's much bigger."
"Well, all right," said the troll, and he let the little billy goat gruff pass.
Soon, the middle billy goat gruff came to the bridge. Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went his hooves.
"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll.
"Oh, it is only I, the middle billy goat gruff," said the goat. "I'm going to the meadow to get fat."
"No, you're not!" shouted the troll. "I'm coming to eat you up!"
"Oh, no! Don't take me! I'm not big enough," pleaded the goat. "Wait for the big billy goat gruff. He's much, much bigger."
"Very well," said the troll, and he let the middle billy goat gruff pass.
Then, the big billy goat gruff came to the bridge. Trip, trap, trip, trap, TRIP, TRAP, TRIP, TRAP, went his hooves. The bridge creaked and groaned under his weight.
"Who's that stamping over my bridge?" roared the troll, his voice even louder than before.
"It is I, the big billy goat gruff!" said the goat, his voice strong and bold.
"Now, I'm coming to eat you up!" shouted the troll.
"Come on, then!" said the big billy goat gruff. He lowered his horns and charged at the troll.
The big billy goat gruff butted the troll so hard that he went tumbling off the bridge and into the rushing river below. The troll was swept away, never to be seen again.
Then, the three billy goats gruff crossed the bridge and went to the beautiful green meadow, where they ate and ate until they were so full they could barely walk home. And if they haven't gotten thin, they're still there to this day.
